This is a sketch I painted this morning about 5am as a way of thinking through an oil painting I want to paint. I am just brainstorming how to paint and what to paint on a canvas that I have begun in oils and am stalled for ideas. This sketch is a tempra background of blue and white acrylic paint thinned with water to paint the design with a brush. I painted it entirely with brushes and did not draw it beforehand with graphite which is somewhat unusual for me on sketches. I made it, signed it, photographed it more than once, uploaded it and posted it. Copyrighted. I think I will make more sketches before deciding what design I want to paint on the lovely blue canvas I painted. I think I will probably paint some sort of surreal or abstract design and not flowers. I like the white skeleton type design for this idea because it lets the blue background shine through. This is the royal blue canvas I painted in oils one day when I was reading and researching the beautiful blue in some paintings of previous centuries. I then made an effort to learn exactly what the blue I was referring too existed of, and where to get it. I am not 100% sure this blue is the same blue I saw in those paintings. But it's a start. My life as an "artist" is a work in progress for certain. I learned to draw as result of formal teaching by a teacher I still think the world of, when I was a teenager. I have learned to paint in a series of steps, of taking course to learn about oils, then practicing for YEARS. I am not self-taught in other words. I had lessons with two artists who had a following at the time--one in Virginia and one in Atlanta, GA. I am always hesitant to say their names because I am not sure I am good enough artist that they would be pleased for me to cite them as a teacher of mine. But mostly I teach myself by experimenting with different mediums, different processes, different brands, different surfaces, different techniques, different styles, different genres. So, it is draw draw draw and paint what I draw. Copyrighted.
